Happy New Year! This year, it’s not a new year, a new me, but more like a new year, a better version of me. There’s something about the 40-year-old version of me that I absolutely love. It took me a while to become this version of me, but I don’t want to change her. I just want to build upon who she is and celebrate her AWESOMENESS as she journeys to 50 (at the end of the year).
This year my goal is to be more intentional in all areas of my life. Doing so requires me to be picky, picky about the things and people that get to be in my life and experience me on any level. Remember in Erykah Badu’s song Appletree, the line that says “I pick my friends like I pick my fruit”? That’s how I’m going to be when it comes to who and what I allow in my life. Everybody doesn’t need access to you. Being connected to you is a privilege, not a right. Some connections are empowering, and other connections are draining.
You get to choose who or what you allow in your life. You also get to choose how people treat you and what you tolerate. What you allow will continue, so start the new year off setting the tone for how that’s going to go. My word for 2024 was reciprocity, which I’m carrying over into this year with other power words related to the goals I have set for myself. Too often, we find ourselves on the giving and doing end and getting mad when that is not being reciprocated by friends and sometimes even family. We show up for people and they never show up for us. This year I encourage you to be a little selfish and give people a taste of their own medicine, by matching your energy and effort with that of theirs and see how they like it.
